November 1-30, 2008.  I stayed home for the first week of this month. Donna manages to get home for the weekend. We put me back in service on Monday the 10th. We got a load picking up in NJ going up near Boston; it picked up on the 12th and delivered the next morning. From Boston we deadheaded to Hartford, CT for a load picking up on the 14th delivering back down to New Jersey. We have been doing a lot of regional reefer loads but, we’re not complaining, they paid well. The Northeast reefer freight this time of year in our business is usually pretty good and there are few reefer trucks around.

Well my back didn’t hold up for long. We picked up a load at JFK, it was a T-Val load that delivered to Syracuse, NY on the 20th. At the delivery I was releasing a locking load bar that did not want to cooperate, when suddenly released I was not prepared for it and it made me twist and bent my back forward in a very unnatural way. The pain was immediate and intense. Donna managed to get the load off, and seeing how we were only about two hours from home that is where we headed.

Once home I made for the bedroom and the heating pad. I thought that if I could get some heat on my back I could get back on the road by Monday. Well Monday came and my back was no better, if anything it had gotten worse. I called my primary physician

I was able to get an appointment for Tuesday the 25th.

Donna brought me to the doctor; at this point I could hardly walk. Dr. Forman took one look at me and said I needed to see an orthopedist. He gave me a script for darvocet and was able to get me an appointment with an orthopedist the same day.

Knowing I wouldn’t be able to go back to work we again decided that Donna would go out as a solo driver. So, Donna drove me to the orthopedist, he looked at me ordered up some x-rays, which they did there, then made an appointment for an MRI. I couldn’t have the MRI done until Monday December 1st. Until then I couldn’t work.

When we returned home Donna went back in service as a solo driver, neither one of us was very happy.  Blog Author  Top of Page  Bottom of Page
